Selbach Riesling Spatlese (QMP) - 2005 - Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
Manitoba Product ID Number
390930
Description
The Grape: The Germans have long regarded the Riesling as, “the Queen of the grapes.” So they should. Good Riesling vintages have commanded high prices for centuries, but at a more practical level, there is no wine more broadly food and occasion-complimentary than the Riesling. The Wine: Typically fine Rieslings are all about subtle, honeyed fruit and mineral with a crisp, cleansing acidity. The Selbach Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay Riesling Spatlese 2002 is a beautiful example of quality German Rieslings. Don’t be put off by the German word-train: Detzem (“er” = “from”) is the town and Maximin Klosterlay is the vineyard on the steps of an Abbey in the beautiful Mosel valley area of western Germany. And Spatlese simply means a later picking, more residual sugar, hence it’s fuller mouth-feel and honeyed texture. The Food: Enjoy this Selbach Riesling slightly chilled, alone as a sipper, or with a whole range of foods from the earth and sea: smoked meats and salmon, turkey, hams, chicken, a stir-fry, anything curried or Indian or Oriental or sweet and sour.

Cape Jaffa Shiraz - 2003 - Mount Benson
Manitoba Product ID Number
2129
Description
Tasting Notes: In 2003 we were blessed with a cool and dry growing season with low to moderate yields and great fruit concentration. This distinctively varietal Shiraz shows the classic spicy notes on the nose with mulberry and blackberry and hints of coffee and chocolate. The palate is generous and mouth-filling with fine tannins and well integrated oak. The wine was created in open vats where it was labouriously plunged by hand three time per day. It was then aged in our underground barrel hall in French barriques for 12 months. This wine has seen minimal filtration to retain the fine fruit characters and has had a light natural egg white fining. Approachable now, this wine will develop well in the bottle for at least 6-10 years. It may throw a crust with extended cellaring.

Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc - 2004 - Mt. Benson, South Australia
Manitoba Product ID Number
2883
Description
Cape Jaffa has blended these two noble varieties to make this classic dry white style. The wine shows cool climate characters typical of the season, with zesty lemon and lime and hints of herbaceousness. The fruit is sourced exclusively from the Mount Benson region. The Sauvignon Blanc makes up 45% of the blend and provides fresh upfront fruit characters. There is a small portion of barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc in the blend to add complexity and structure. The Semillon component makes up 55% of the blend but is less obvious in the younger wine. It does however play an important role in the wines ageing potential and will become more apparent with time.?

Cape Jaffa Unwooded Chardonnay - 2006 - Mt. Benson - South Australia
Manitoba Product ID Number
4891
Description
One of our all time favourites with cellar door sales customers, the Unwooded Chardonnay from Cape Jaffa is one of the best examples of its style. Fruit is picked from Padthaway and McLaren Vale. We have found that the blend of these two great regions results in a wine with tropical fruit characters reminiscent of the warmer McLaren Vale fruit, and great structure and natural acid associated with the cooler region of Padthaway. Fruit from each region is whole bunch pressed and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The wine sees no oak. By treating the wine very gently in the winery, we have preserved fresh fruit characters of peaches and melons. The palate has a small amount of residual sugar balanced by crisp acidity.

Brock's Reef Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc - 2004 - Mt. Benson, South Australia
Manitoba Product ID Number
3568
Description
The Margaret Brock Reef lies in the Great Southern Ocean off the South Eastern coast of Australia. In the days of the Square Riggers it was a dangerous impediment to coastal trading and many ships foundered on its jagged teeth, blown in by South-westerly gales. One such ship was the ‘Margaret Brock’ which met its doom in 1852, with much loss of life. One hundred and fifty years on, the vines grown on its coast are producing wines that the old skippers would have braved the reef for. This wine shows herbaceous characters of fresh asparagus, characteristic of the long, cool growing season. The palate is crisp and zesty with great length of flavour. Here at Cape Jaffa, we like to enjoy this wine with fresh crayfish which we catch ourselves off the Margaret Brock Reef, but it will go well with any seafood or white meat.

Cape Jaffa Siberia Shiraz - 2002 - Mt. Benson
Manitoba Product ID Number
4890
Description
Cape Jaffa \\\"Siberia\\\" Shiraz 2002 was an outstanding vintage, hence the production of this wine which is only produced in exceptional years. The fruit comes exclusively from one vineyard which we call \\\"Siberia.\\\" The cold and windswept nature of the site produces small berries with intense colour and flavour and a distinctive spiciness. Production is limited to around 500 cases or 20 barriques. The 2002 Siberia Shiraz was fermented in open top concrete tanks, where it was hand plunged three times a day before careful extended maceration on skins for six weeks. It was matured in new French oak barriques for 24 months before a light natural egg white fining (hand separated!). Ripe mulberry dominates the palate with hints of toasty oak, black pepper and dark plums. The wine has excellent fruit intensity and depth of flavour and will go well with red meat dishes or with blue cheese. This wine will age gracefully in the bottle for about 10 years. Rob Dobson Notes on Cape Jaffa ‘Siberia’ Shiraz 2002: “Siberia’ refers to a small section of the Cape Jaffa estate vineyard.  This rocky knob is exposed to the cool breezes blowing off the ocean.  As a result, the pickers christened this parcel of vines “Siberia” because it is so barren and chilly.  These struggling vines yield a small amount of intensely flavoured grapes.  Winemakers Derek and Anna Hooper produce this wine only in exceptional vintages and just 20 barrels (about 500 cases) of this wine were made. It was fermented in open tanks, where the floating cap of grape skins was punched down by hand (pigeage) three times a day before an extended maceration on the skins for six weeks to extract maximum colour and flavour.  The wine was then matured in new French oak barriques (possibly Limousin or Nevers oak with a medium to heavy toast) for an astonishing 24 months.  It was fined with natural egg whites before bottling.  In the glass, this Shiraz is very dark, with lifted aromas of black cherry jam on toast, cocoa and smoky oak.  There are deep, intense flavours of B.C. cherries mingled with freshly ground white pepper.  The finish lasts almost a minute.  Huge lashings of classy French oak tend to slightly overpower the massive fruit at this point in the wine’s evolution, but with more age this serious wine should pull itself into balance.  This is delicious now, but it would be interesting to put a few bottles away to track its evolution over the next decade or so.

Special Notes
Note received from D. A. who believed me when I said this was the best Shiraz I had ever tasted: \\\"Just my opinion, but the Siberia is the finest Shiraz available ...... We just tried a bottle, and I\\\'m going to cellar a case and watch it\\\'s evolution over the next 10 years.\\\" Note: the Cape Jaffa \\\"Siberia\\\" 2002 is a one-time buy - once gone, that\\\'s it.

This great example of Shiraz from the Limestone Coast region shows great complexity and style. On the nose: an intense mix of pepper and black cherries with hints of charred oak. The palate is rich and flavoursome with excellent structure and good flavour length. Enjoy in the company of friends and with your favourite foods, especially grilled red or white meats (ribs, steak, lamb, sausage, chicken and kangaroo!), chili, mushrooms and bold cheeses.

Hypogee 2002 - 2002 - COTES DU ROUSSILLON VILLAGES
Manitoba Product ID Number
4910
Description
Domaine de la Serre Hypogee Côtes de Roussillon Villages 2002 (France) Made from 40% Carignan, 40% Syrah, and 20% Grenache, all from 60 year old plus vines. Rich, heady, and complex, this full-bodied red is a true find. Aromas of blackberries, black plums, and blueberries are balanced by white pepper, tar, smoke and a pleasant, sweet oakiness. The texture is silky, with powerful tannins, perfect acidity, and so much flavor that the first sip is disarming. This wine is just beginning to show off its character, and needs another 10+ years to really shine, so try a bottle know, and save the rest for 2012-2018. This wine is from the Fenouilledes, a region in the North of Roussillon with legendary black schist soil that has historically created the inky, powerful wines used to add body and character to thinner wines from other places (i.e. Burgundy & Bordeaux). Though such practices have long been illegal in France, it is not hard to imagine that just a little of this wine would be enough to make even the most insipid red taste interesting. - Winesquire.com

Luzon Red - 2006 - Jumilla
Manitoba Product ID Number
4512
Description
Young red wine, blend of Syrah-35%- and Monastrell-65% –Monastrell grape is native to Jumilla in Southeast Spain, and is known in other winemaking regions like Bandol in France as Mourvèdre. The grapes used in the production of this wine are grown in our own vineyards. The Monastrell is from the Cerrillares vineyard at 600 m above sea level and the Syrah at the Castillo de Luzón vineyard at 700 m above sea level. Both of these vineyards have a maximum yield of 4000 kg of grape per hectare. The harvest took place during the middle of September 2006 for the Syrah and the first week of October for the Monastrell. The grapes were handpicked. Maceration lasted 20 days with the temperature being maintained below 24ºC for the Syrah and 12 days maceration at 28ºC or less for the Monastrell. In both cases the wine was macerated in contact with the skins before being deposited in stainless steel tanks where the malolactic fermentation took place. TASTING NOTES The outstanding LUZON 2006 is a blend of 65% Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and 35% Syrah. It is a full-throttle, exuberant, dense ruby/purple-coloured effort with loads of crème de cassis, liquorice, truffle, and acacia flower characteristics. This exotic, deep, broad, intense red should be drunk over the next 3-4 years, although it may last longer.

Chateau de Plassan Rouge - 2005 - Bordeaux
Manitoba Product ID Number
5592
Description
This was an exceptional vintage. One more dry and very hot year. Our soil, with clay, allows the vine to stand up to the dryness. Harvest took place in perfect conditions with ideal ripeness. Picking began on 19 Sept., 2005. 35,000 bottles were produced and bottling occurred on 5 July, 2006. In order to preserve all the qualities of this wine, a light filtration has been made and so sometimes there will be a natural sediment. This wine has a beautiful red ruby colour with a perfect limpidity. The nose is intense, first with fruity aromas (black currant and raspberry). Some deeper aromas of smoke and moss appear with aeration. On the palate the attack is very soft and the evolution fresh and round. The finish is pleasing with refreshing tannins and good length.

ROUGE is made with young vines of Merlot especially selected for their ability to produce coloured, round and fruit wines. My [Oenologist, Christophe Ollivier] goal with the Chateau de Plassan ROUGE is a wine that is: -"reachable" by its taste and price -modern in its packaging - breaking with some of the Bordeaux tradition in this regard -simple and pleasant and able to offer wine drinking pleasure.

Chateau D'Armajan Des Ormes Sauternes - 2001 - Sauternes, Bordeaux

Description
"Elegant and not too sweet with baked nectarine, vanilla, smoky, pineapple, egg yolk, mineral, honey flavours with some dried apricot and citrus on the finish. Fabulous concentration, great match [with Pumpkin cheese cake]." Anthony Gismondi, Vancouver Sun 6 October 2007 "My little sweetie pie. Beyond Champagne, a fabulous dessert wine may be the most civilized addition to any meal. Forget the pie, forget the chocolate pot au crème or crème brulee finale, for the adventurous, bliss arrives in a sweet, golden-amber liquid from Bordeaux-aka Sauternes. Honeyed apricots and apple sauce aromas studded with chunky bits of luscious pineapple sprinkled with sweet spices. On the palate, the Chateau d’Armanjan is bright, oily and viscous with dried fruit, candied lemon rind, white pepper and Earl Grey tea flavours. A sticky treat to end any great meal."
